Childlife-A future for street children in Mae Sai
The news from 12.02.2001, which alarmed us
Mae Sai evacuated as shells hit town-but what about the
street children? Thai artillery retaliated against Burmese
army gun emplacements across the border after mortar shells
and stray bullets rained on Mae Sai town last Sunday, killing
two people and wounding 15 others. The townspeople were
evacuated, More than 1,000 soldiers backed by armoured
personnel carriers and helicopter gunships moved in to
secure the border.
But we don't know what happened to Ngaow and the street children. Were they also evacuated despite being aliens without papers? Were they arrested?
And what about their families living on the Burmese side and those street children, who stayed in Burma overnight? The border is closed, on the Burmese side there were many casualties and food is becoming more and more expensive. The street childrens families are akkha, a ethnic minority who suffers persecution by the Burmese Regime and is fighting every day to survive. The evacuation and the increase of food prices hits them very hard.As always it is the weak, discriminated, persecuted and the children, who are the victims of this armed conflict.
