Children’s Stories: Cob, 5 years

Background: A NGO from another province brought Cob to School
for Life. Both of his parents had died shortly after his birth. His grandmother couldn’t cope and kept him in a box. He lived in the box
like a monkey and developed symptoms of ‘Hospitalismus’ . He left
his faeces everywhere, stopped being curious and was not able to
keep anything in his mind because there wasn’t anything to keep in
his mind. On the farm: Farm: In the beginning Cob was running
around everywhere, hiding behind trees and bushes and peeking
from behind them observing this new world. With time he came closer and choose Joy as his new Mum. He was so fixed on Joy that
Joy’s own daughter Leon who is the same age as Cob first had to
learn not to be jealous and to accept Cob like all the other children
as a new sibling . The little ones- Cob, Leon, Kik and Kuk, Joe and
Non – now have formed a close companionship, digging together in
the sand heap and romping around with the dogs.

Any attempts to send Cob to kindergarten at the local school
together with Kik and Kuk failed. Cob kept on running away out into
the wide world. The adults decided that it would be better to grant
him one year of freedom without kindergarten. When cob was sure
that he didn’t have to go to the kindergarten he took Yoon’s bicycle
and moved it around for days, up the hill and down again though the
meadow. He studied t he pedals and tried to find out the secret of
balance. But he was to small to be able to start any serious riding
attempts. Then three children bicycles we bought so that the and
other children would get a chance to ride. He seized the chance.
By now he is racing around on his bicycle cross-country. He is not
frightened by scratches. Cob is discovering the world.
